Project List  (1987 – 2011) by Sector Type

Definitions

Duties and Responsibilities often vary in accordance with a particular project and/or employer. Whereas one employer may regard a particular level of responsibility as a Project Manager duty, another may regard the same responsibility as that of a Sr. Job Captain. Despite attempts by the AIA and other organizations, there is little standardization with regard to job titles in the industry.

To assist with this regard, I have provided these definitions for use with the tables below. The title, as listed in “My Position” may or may not have been my “official” title, as represented by the firm. Responsibilities from all employers have been consolidated and unified into the selection of duties shown here.

Advisor Not actively participating in the project. Advice or direction sought out by others due to experience in a particular project type. Only projects where the participation resulted in any appreciable billings or timecard reporting are listed. All others have been omitted.

Draftsman Responsible for production of working drawings under direction of others. Minimal client contact.

Lead Draftsman Leads and directs small team of Draftsmen. Responsible for control of Document Presentation. Assures continuity of documents in a team environment. In deeply hierarchal work environments, may also serve as an assistant to a Job Captain.

Job Captain On large projects where work is divided for efficiency, multiple Job Captains are involved. Each is Responsible for a particular section or aspect of a project. Works with other Job Captains in a coordinated effort to complete the entire project. Often requires delegation of work load to multiple draftsmen.

Sr. Job Captain Often (incorrectly) described as “Project Architect”. Duties include the supervision and coordination of all Job Captains and the coordination of a completed drawing package for the project. Additional responsibilities include setting all production or project standards, coordination of all consulting engineers, specifications, assures deadlines are met, conducts onsite observation. Right hand of the Project Manager. Moderate client contact.

Project Manager Responsible for Contract Administration, usually on multiple projects simultaneously. Defines project, goals & schedule. Works with Principle on Design. Manages project from beginning to end. Heavy client contact including after hours social marketing.

Principle Brings home the bacon and in return gets all the credit. Creates impossible designs on “19th hole” napkins. Writes checks, pays taxes, signs drawings. Occasionally contributes to project.
